02 Change & Context

  • BC 4 1. substance - objective elements that is based on the world. 2. subject (in sentence) - basic thing in the sentence, but defined by verb — Before socrates, taske of every philosopher was to find some thing fundemantal, unchangeable elements under the world. (arche). Lately, Aristotle made a word hypokeimenon to define the thing they tried to find. Also, in his logic, it was also used as a subject in a sentence which is a basic thing in the sentence, but subordintat by verb.
  • 14c subget - ruled class, normal people, — Middle Ages were a strict class society. People need to make a word to explain those who served for king, subordinated by him. So they use the ward subjet from France, regardless of aristotle. It means ruled class under the king.
  • 16c subject in the sentence, topic — When the renesance was come, scholars started to read Greek classics and translated it to latin word. The Latin word subjectum still means the fundamental elements under the world. And the meaning of the subject in the sentence survived. Also, it was used as a meaning of topic, which is a fundamental thing lying under the art or literature. And still, it was used to call ruled people.
  • 18c subjective - personal (not objective) / subject - me, who recognize and construct the world. — As I mentioned, before 18c, subjectum means the core elements, objective, unchangeable thing under the world. But Descartes and Kant change this. According to that, the most important thing under the world was 'I', not a thing. 'I' am the one who can recognize and construct the world and make some meanings. So Kant use the word Subject as I. And later when it became subjective, it become a word that we know. It means personal feelings or thought, not an object thing.

05 Reflection

I used to think that subjective is not good. Because it's not an objective fact that everyone can agree. But I realized that the word " subject " was once used as a meaning of object. And it contains Decartes and kant's philosophy. They claim that 'I' regonize and construce the world, not the object world give us meaning. So 'I' and my perspective is basically under the everything.
